Movement Looks Different During Exams
Exams bring a unique kind of pressure. Between late nights, long study sessions, and the stress of deadlines, it can feel impossible to make time for wellness. But staying active during exams doesn’t have to mean hitting the gym for an hour. This December, Campus Recreation’s Fitness & Wellness Wednesday series reminds students that movement can be simple, short, and seamlessly woven into study routines.
Stretching for Focus
Even two minutes of stretching can make a difference. Gentle stretches for the neck, shoulders, or back help relieve tension from long hours at a desk. Research shows that short stretching breaks improve blood flow, reduce muscle tightness, and can even enhance concentration when you return to your work (Mayo Clinic, 2023).

Tiny Wins Add Up
When your schedule feels packed, five minutes might be all you can spare—and that’s enough. Small “brain breaks” like a short walk, a breathing exercise, or a quick movement video can refresh your mind and reduce stress. According to the American Psychological Association (2022), micro-breaks boost both productivity and well-being, especially during periods of high cognitive demand.

Walking While Studying
Movement can also support learning. Listening to recorded notes or podcasts while walking, or reviewing material while biking at a gentle pace, combines physical activity with study time. Studies show that light exercise can improve memory retention and cognitive performance, making it a powerful tool during exam prep (CDC, 2022).
