Missions
are a new way to bring concrete solutions to some of the EU/world's greatest challenges. They have ambitious goals and will deliver concrete results by 2030. The five EU Missions are as follows:
Partnerships
bring together private and/or public entities to address the world's most pressing challenges through joint research and innovation initiatives. The goal of partnerships is to enable the European Commission (EC) and entities from European Union (EU) member states, associated countries, the private sector, non-profit organizations, and other stakeholders to develop a common vision, gather necessary investments, and implement initiatives through joint activities.
were launched under the first Horizon Europe strategic planning period (2021-2024). The identifies nine additional European partnership candidates.
Pillar 1 - Excellent Science
ERC Synergy Grants
The ERC Synergy Grants program has closed for 2026 competition; check back next soon for 2027 program information.- Synergy grants address very ambitious research questions that cannot be answered by 1 single PI and their group.
- Any field of research
- 2-4 principal investigators
- Maximum €10M for 6 years
- Yearly call
- Important: Canadian researchers can partner on these grants: 1 PI can be based outside the EU and participate with full EU funding
Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions
Note: Canada's association status for Pillar 1 programs, Excellent Science (MSCA, ERC) has not changed. Canadian researchers could receive funding as an associated partner, but not as the coordinating institution (the lead).
